Has GAF made a major roofing gaffe?

What is bad about being one of the first is that you can be a “guinea pig”. The company that replaced my hail damaged roof removed the spinning turbines and put in GAF ridge vents without asking or telling me.
The GAF company that makes a very popular shingle apparently claims that these vents are better than the turbines (and may only fully insure their shingles if the vents are put in). On May 17th the temperature got above 80 for about 4 hours (12-4 pm) and cooled quickly by 7pm with a nice 60 degree breeze- so that I had to wear a jacket! Yet when I walked into my home at 8pm it was hot! Even during our HOT summer days my home was never that warm by my evening return-even with over 100 temp and no air conditioning! Obviously there is now no air movement occurring in my attic. This is a serious problem that could effect a lot of homes that have gables, steep inclines with tall attics, and with few soffit vents. Note also that my house like many in the neighborhood have cosmetic front designs that omit soffit vents! This hampers ventilation since AS most of the wind comes front to back or visa versa SINCE the side vents are blocked by houses next door! Air basically has to come in at a perpendicular angle to effectively force itself into soffit vents! The soffit vents in the back of most homes are hampered by trees and a high fences. The biggest problem, however, is that my soffit vents are blocked by 1 foot of insulation that was “tossed” into every corner and edge when the house was built!!! So there is NO SOFFIT ventilation and the GAF ridge vents DO NOT WORK! Frankly there is going to be a storm of pain and frustration hitting Texas soon after the first heat wave hits, and those unhappy people are going to be looking for someone to blame….and in the end it may be the politicians and the “experts”!   Then there is also the problem of the resale value of the home and the potential harm to everything in the super heated attic.

-Note that this failure will also be an unnecessary drain on our utilities!
-Initially I recommended my roofer to a neighbor. Her salesman (who was different than mine but from the same compay) told her that it is better to remove her 4 turbines and put in ridge vents. I called her up and warned her. This is just an affirmation that the product is being sold as a replacement for turbines no matter the design of the home. The gabled and steep inclines of many roofs allow less room for the ridge vents where the main attic is! At least this salesman gave my neighbor the option, mine did not mention the ridge vent replacement!  If I go to a doctor he checks me out before he recommends treatment because each person is different! These roofers are NOT checking out the soffit vents and the flow of air to see if they are adequate for the necessary movement and air exchange of ridge vents!
This letter was sent to Congressmen, TV stations, newspaper, and others…..yet no response came from anyone!  So I have started contacting Realtors and THEY ARE LISTENING AND ACTING UPON THIS INFORMATION!

  1. Good post. I learn something totally new and challenging on sites I
stumbleupon on a daily basis. It’s always interesting to read
through articles from other writers and practice a little something from other sites.

  2. Howdy! This post couldn’t be written much better!
Going through this article reminds me of my previous
roommate! He always kept preaching about this. I will forward this information to him.
Fairly certain he’s going to have a great read.

    Thanks for sharing!

    1. An outstanding share! I have just forwarded this onto a co-worker who was doing a little homework on this.
And he actually bought me lunch simply because I stumbled
upon it for him… lol. So let me reword this…. Thanks for the meal!!
But yeah, thanx for spending time to discuss this matter here
      on your web page.
